University of Waikato – free e-books, resources for online teaching and to support student learning

Free ebooks published by staff from the University of Waikato

  • Bonk & Khoo (2014). Adding some TEC-VARIETY: 100+ activities for motivating and retaining learners online – this e-handbook gives online lecturers ideas of different ways (100 online pedagogical activities) to meaningfully engage students across different disciplines. Online lecturers can start by referring to the summary table in Chapter 15 for the list of 100 activities and go back to any of the earlier chapters for more explanation on how to use them. Each activity is rated according to duration required, time it takes to set up, risk level, cost, level of learner centredness. More helpful resources and websites at the end of the book.
  • Wright & Forbes (2015). Digital Smarts: Enhancing learning and teaching (PDF 9.2 MB) – an edited text comprising chapters authored by University of Waikato staff, this e-book can be downloaded in full or as single chapters. The book regards digital technologies as the servants of learning, and shares diverse perspectives and practical implications. Useful chapters for online delivery include those focused on guidelines for online discussion; assessment; distance students’ library engagement, and workload solutions for online teachers.

Resources to support student learning

Good Practice Assessment of Online Teaching in Universities in Aotearoa New Zealand during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Lessons for the Future

Universities in Aotearoa New Zealand recognise there is a lot to learn from their online learning responses to the pandemic.

To capture practices and collectively develop lessons for the future they have complied this ‘Good Practice Assessment’.

The report covers successes, challenges and identifies factors which will help preparation for future risks to academic continuity.

Student Online Learning Experiences in Universities in New Zealand during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Lessons for the Future

The SOLE: Student Online Learning Experiences project is a multi-university study looking at what can be learnt from NZ university students’ experiences of online learning as a result of an international pandemic.

The research began in 2020, and results and related resources can be found on the SOLE website.
